With the excitement of the holidays, there can also be a great deal of stress and anxiety. Changes in routine, abundances of decorations and time spent visiting family and friends can be overwhelming for some children. Here are some tips to help your family have an enjoyable and reduced stress holiday season!

1. Prepare your child for what is coming up. If you know you are going for visits or a dinner explain to your child prior to the event where you are going, for how long, who to expect at the event etc. Encourage them to bring a familiar toy or comfort object with them.

2. Try to maintain a routine during the break from school. Maintaining a schedule that resembles a usual day-to-day routine can help to decrease anxiety as your child is better able to expect what is coming up, sustain healthy sleeping habits, and be better prepared for the return to school.

3. Avoid decorations that you know may be overstimulating for your child. Some individuals may be sensitive to bright lights or loud noises, which can increase anxiety.

4. Prepare a calming or “To Do” kit for times when you will be travelling or visiting. Familiar items can help to decrease anxiety and manage overwhelming situations.

5. Provide balance during the holiday season. While visiting and dinners are a wonderful part of the holidays it is important to incorporate down time during this busy time of year.
