Nutritional Counselling

What is Nutritional Counselling?

Nutrition counselling is provided by a nutrition expert who empowers their client to understand the relationship between food and their body. The goal of nutrition counselling is to help guide the client to enjoy a balanced food intake to ensure nutrient sufficiency. A Registered Dietitian (RD) will create a balanced nutrition plan considering age, anthropometrics, genetics and medical conditions. Their recommendations are tailored to their client's personal preferences, strengths and challenges. Based on the specific nutrition goals, the RD will guide the client on what, how, when, why and where to eat. RDs can work with clients of all ages and with many conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, weight management, gastrointestinal disease, stress, inflammation, dietary restrictions, food allergies or intolerances and disordered eating. A dietitian may also include a more holistic approach to the treatment plan that includes intuitive and mindful eating and nutritional supplements.

Why Would I Access Nutritional Counselling?

Everyone can benefit from nutrition counselling at any stage of their life or health status. You may wish to access nutrition counselling if your child is challenged with any of the following:

  • Picky Eating - limited nutritional intake leading to stressful meal times, nutrient deficiency
  • Disordered Eating - avoiding foods/food groups, obsession about health and/or appearances, restrictive eating, binge eating, unhealthy food relationships
  • Gastrointestinal Issues - conditions including Celiac's disease, IBS, IBD and symptoms including gas, bloating, diarrhea, pain, constipation, etc.
