Social Stories
When developing a social story for children, it is important to write from the first person perspective (I will try to wait until it is daytime before I get up in the morning). We make sure to include the behaviour we would like to see as opposed to behaviours we would not like to see (When I am upset I need to use my words and let others know how I am feeling). Pair age-appropriate photographs (favourite cartoon characters, animals, etc.), picture symbols or drawings with text to help people who have difficulty reading or for younger children.
Visual Schedules/Supports
When creating Visual Schedule for children it is important to use them consistently in order for the child to retain the information and be able to establish independence. Visual Supports organize a sequence of events, enhancing the student's ability to understand, anticipate and participate in those events. When a visual support is implemented we are supplementing verbal instruction, clarifying the information for the student and increasing overall comprehension.
