You can try this fun and therapeutic activity at home for your own personal use, with your children or as a family.

Create story-telling rocks by painting images, words, patterns, or colours on to rocks. Use the rocks to tell stories, to role-play, or to carry around with you as a physical reminder to help keep you grounded and calm when you’re feeling anxious, angry, or experiencing a low mood.

What you need to make story-telling rocks:

  • Small rocks
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Paint palette
  • Container for water
  • Clear nail polish top coat

Note: all materials can be purchased at a dollar store

What to do to make story-telling rocks:

  • Decide how you want to decorate your rocks
  • Use acrylic paints and brushes to paint your images, words, patterns, or colours onto your rocks
  • Let the paint dry on the rocks
  • Paint a coat of clear nail polish top coat on top of the painted area on your rock, as a protective coat
  • Go ahead and use your rocks to tell your story or to carry around with you as a tool and coping strategy!
